The Ridge: Crafting with Brick

The Ridge is a single residential project in Canterbury that explores how a contemporary family home can sit confidently within an established suburban context. The brief prioritised longevity, material integrity and restraint over visual novelty, asking how a new dwelling could feel contemporary without dominating its streetscape. The aim was to create a home with a calm, enduring presence—one that would age gracefully over time.

The design approach began with materiality and proportion rather than formal expression. Handmade Petersen Kolumba bricks became the architectural anchor, selected for their subtle variation, texture and depth. The building mass is carefully articulated through carved voids, curved openings and moments of shadow, softening the perceived solidity of the masonry.

Internally, light is drawn deep into the plan through controlled, framed views rather than expansive glazing. This approach creates spaces that feel both protected and open, with a quiet richness achieved through disciplined detailing.
